How to prospect CFOs and finance leaders on LinkedIn
Finance leaders post less than most buyers and trust vendors less than almost anyone, because every tool they buy has to pay for itself on a spreadsheet they will build. The ones who do post write about close, forecasting, audits and systems, which is plain, specific material to open with.
Who to target
Companies of roughly 50 to 2,000 employees with an in-house finance team. Smaller companies outsource finance, and larger ones buy through procurement.
Titles to search
Skip these, they only look the part
- Fractional and part-time CFOs, unless you sell to them (a real market, but a different one).
- Accountants at accounting firms, who serve clients rather than buy for one company.
- Finance influencers and newsletter writers.
- Investment roles with “finance” in the title (analysts, VCs).
Where CFOs and finance leaders show up
Ranked for this audience, best first. Each one is a source an outreach agent can watch.
- 1
Buying events
New CFOs and heads of finance, recent funding, and hiring for FP&A or controllers.
Finance leaders post rarely, so events are the most reliable signal. A new CFO reviews every system in their first two quarters.
- 2
Keyword posts
Finance leaders posting about month-end close, forecasting, ERP migrations, audits and spend control.
When they do post, it is about an operating problem, stated plainly.
- 3
Creator audiences
Comment sections of respected CFO-community writers and finance-ops voices.
Smaller pool, high quality. Fractional CFOs are the main noise.
- 4
Directory search
Title search for CFO and VP Finance at companies in your size band.
When intent is invisible, a well-defined company list plus title search beats waiting for a post.
Words they actually post
Watch posts that use the words CFOs and finance leaders use for their own problems, not the words vendors use to sell to them. The author of a post like that is usually the buyer. The commenters under a vendor post usually aren’t.
Timing: which buying events matter
Buying events are public and dated. They say when a person or a company is likely to buy, but not what they want to buy.
Job change
StrongA new CFO reviews systems, vendors and processes, and has the mandate to change them.
Funding
StrongA raise brings new reporting duties to investors and the board. That changes what finance needs.
Hiring
UsefulHiring a controller or an FP&A lead means finance is growing past the CFO’s own spreadsheets.
Three connection notes that fit
Each one cites something true about the person, stays under LinkedIn’s 300-character limit and leaves out links. When there is nothing to cite, say how you found them. Don’t invent a reason.
“Hi Helen, your post about getting month-end close from fifteen days to six was more useful than most finance content I see. I build tools for finance teams at that stage. Would be glad to connect.”
196 / 300 characters
“Hi Mark, congrats on joining as CFO. After a raise the board pack usually changes before anything else does. I work with finance teams on that reporting. Not a pitch, glad to connect.”
183 / 300 characters
“Hi Sofia, I work with finance leaders at mid-sized software companies on forecasting. I would rather connect first than send a pitch you did not ask for. Happy to be in touch.”
175 / 300 characters
What doesn’t work
- ROI claims you cannot back up. A CFO will ask for the model.
- Casual tone and emoji. Finance leaders read them as a lack of seriousness.
- Pretending you saw activity when you found them by title. Say how you found them.
Questions
Are CFOs active on LinkedIn?
They read more than they post. Plan to source most finance leaders from buying events and title search, and treat posts as a bonus when you find them.
Should I target the CFO or the controller?
The CFO or VP Finance for anything strategic or expensive. Controllers and FP&A leads for tools their own team uses every day.
What makes a note work for finance leaders?
It is specific, short and calm, and makes no claims it can’t prove. The same thing that makes a note work anywhere, with less tolerance for anything else.
