How to prospect sales leaders on LinkedIn
Selling to salespeople is the hardest version of outbound. They know every opener, and they grade your note against the ones they write themselves. It is also the most honest version: if your targeting and your first line are good, a sales leader will notice and usually reply.
Who to target
B2B companies of roughly 20 to 500 people with an outbound or sales-led motion. Product-led companies without a sales team are a different sale.
Titles to search
Skip these, they only look the part
- Sales trainers, coaches and “sales influencers”, who post constantly and buy nothing.
- Account executives and SDRs, unless you sell a tool reps buy for themselves.
- Sales leaders at sales-tech vendors, who are usually your competitors.
- Fractional sales leaders, unless you sell to consultancies.
Where sales leaders show up
Ranked for this audience, best first. Each one is a source an outreach agent can watch.
- 1
Keyword posts
Sales leaders writing about pipeline coverage, missed quarters, ramp time and hiring SDRs.
Sales leaders post about the number. A post about a pipeline problem is a timely opening.
- 2
Competitor engagement
People engaging with your competitors’ posts, especially complaints in the comments.
Sales leaders are vocal about tools that fail them.
- 3
Buying events
New VPs of Sales and CROs, and companies hiring a batch of SDRs or AEs.
A new sales leader rebuilds the stack and the process in their first quarter.
- 4
Creator audiences
Comment sections of respected sales operators and RevOps writers.
Good pool, heavy noise. Filter trainers and reps.
Words they actually post
Watch posts that use the words sales leaders use for their own problems, not the words vendors use to sell to them. The author of a post like that is usually the buyer. The commenters under a vendor post usually aren’t.
Timing: which buying events matter
Buying events are public and dated. They say when a person or a company is likely to buy, but not what they want to buy.
Job change
StrongNew sales leaders are expected to change something in 90 days. Tools are the easiest thing to change.
Hiring
StrongHiring several reps at once creates onboarding, territory and tooling problems at the same time.
Funding
UsefulA Series A or B usually comes with a revenue target, which lands on sales.
Three connection notes that fit
Each one cites something true about the person, stays under LinkedIn’s 300-character limit and leaves out links. When there is nothing to cite, say how you found them. Don’t invent a reason.
“Hi Chris, your post that reply rates dropped the week the team switched to a bigger list was the most useful thing I read on outbound this month. I work on the targeting side of that. Would be good to connect.”
209 / 300 characters
“Hi Aisha, congrats on the new VP Sales role. The first quarter is usually about finding out what the pipeline really is. Not pitching in this note, just glad to connect with sales leaders who are rebuilding.”
207 / 300 characters
“Hi Leo, saw the team is hiring five SDRs at once. Ramp is usually the hard part at that pace. I work on giving new reps better lists from day one. Happy to connect.”
164 / 300 characters
What doesn’t work
- Any opener a sales leader would teach their SDRs not to use.
- Fake personalisation, like “I see we are both in sales”.
- Asking for a meeting in the note. Earn the reply first.
Questions
How do you write a connection note a sales leader will accept?
Keep it short, make it specific to something they said, and leave out the ask. Sales leaders judge the craft, so a restrained note is itself a signal.
Should I target the VP Sales or the SDR manager?
The VP or CRO owns the budget for most sales tools. SDR managers are a good way in for tools that affect only their team.
What is the best signal for sales leaders?
A new role. New sales leaders are expected to change something quickly, and job changes are public.
